Waimea Middle’s advisory panel convenes Monday
Waimea Middle School’s newly appointed local advisory panel will hold its first meeting from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. Monday in classroom K-04. All of its meetings are open for the school community to attend. An agenda for the meeting is posted at waimeamiddleschool.org.
The panel is comprised of representatives from all of the school’s stakeholder groups, including students, family members, faculty, staff, administrative leadership, community leaders and partners and representatives of Hookakoo Corp.
The advisory group provides school-community input and feedback for school leadership and Hookakoo Corp. on how best to support students’ academic progress.
Principal Matt Horne will be introduced at the meeting, which will also include a discussion of educational plans for the coming school year, community support for a longer school day and the next steps to be taken for accreditation by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges.
Keauhou Canoe Club awards $2,000
in scholarships
The Keauhou Canoe Club presented a $1,000 academic achievement scholarship in honor of James F. Rogers to Lorelei Nakagawa of West Hawaii Explorations Academy. Nakagawa plans to attend Hawaii Community College and study liberal arts.
The club also awarded a $1,000 meritorious achievement scholarship in honor of Mike Haines to Matelita “Lita” Tamoefolan of Ke Kula O Ehunuikaimalino. Tamoefolan will attend Hawaii Community College and pursue Hawaiian studies.
Each of these women distinguished themselves as state championship paddlers for their canoe club and high school paddling programs. In addition, they achieved at the highest levels academically, organizationally and in community service with their perseverance, hard work and leadership efforts.
The club also celebrates the college graduation of its first scholarship recipient, Ryan Daugherty. The 2008 Konawaena graduate completed his bachelor of science degree in mechanical engineering and is now employed by the Boeing Co. in Seattle.
Students attend anatomy lab
Students from Kohala, Waimea and Waikoloa increased their knowledge of anatomy and physiology at an intensive college-prep anatomy lab. Maureen Combes and Kristin Wohlschlagel facilitated the workshop helping 12 students examine both form and function of major organs and systems. Students aged 12 to 18 absorbed information via hands-on dissection, demonstration, electronic resources and individual instruction.
Specimens ranged from crayfish and frogs to cow eyeballs and fetal pigs, illustrating concepts of comparative anatomy. Structures and tissues were inspected in detail using the ProScope HR handheld microscope — the latest in digital microscopy. In addition to dissection, students made 3D “brain hats” as a study aid, and played memory-jogging games.
The workshop was offered in coordination with The Kohala Learning Center in Hawi. The instructors will offer the workshop again July 10 and 11.

College application deadline set for Aug. 1
An Aug. 1 application deadline has been set for the fall semester at Hawaii Community College and its University Center, West Hawaii located in Kealakekua.
The college no longer has a late application process; anyone considering taking fall semester classes must apply by that deadline. Submitting an application does not require one to register for classes.

School garden volunteer training slated for July 19, 26
The Hawaii Island School Garden Network will offer two free school garden volunteer training classes from 9 a.m. to noon July 19 and 26 at Nancy Redfeather’s Kawanui Farm in Honalo. To register, email Redfeather at nredfeather@kohalacenter.org or Donna Mitts at dmitts@kohalacenter.org.
Volunteers will learn to work alongside students to help maintain the gardens, participate in the outdoor kitchen cooking and help teachers turn the experience into lessons in science, nutrition and environmental education.
